Play
The Comedy of Errors
Two pairs of identical twins, separated at sea years ago, land in the same city on the same day, and nobody can tell them apart.
First Night is a theatre diary for logging the shows you've seen and discovering what to see next.
The story
Shakespeare's shortest play opens with Egeon, a merchant of Syracuse, under sentence of death in rival Ephesus while he searches for one of his lost twin sons. Unknown to everyone, both twins called Antipholus and their twin servants, both called Dromio, are in town at once, so wives, goldsmiths and officers keep mistaking one for the other over money, a gold chain and a husband locked out of his own house.
In the room
A farce played out over a single day, driven by slapstick beatings, quick-fire wordplay and mounting accusations of madness, with the threat of an execution hanging over the comedy.
Good fit if you like
mistaken-identity farce, physical comedy and Shakespeare at his most playful.
