Drama
The story

Set during the Salem witch trials of 1692 and 1693, the play dramatises a community consumed by accusations of witchcraft. Written in the 1950s, it is also an allegory for McCarthyism and the persecution of people accused of communist sympathies in the United States. Personal suspicion and institutional power become inseparable as the accusations gather force.

In the room

A historical drama that doubles as political allegory, using accusation and persecution to examine how fear can harden into institutional power.

Good fit if you like
