The story

Jack Worthing leads two lives: in the country he is the respectable guardian of young Cecily Cardew, while in London he calls himself Ernest and escapes the responsibilities of home. His friend Algernon discovers the deception just as Jack hopes to propose to Algernon’s cousin Gwendolen, turning a romantic plan into a problem of names, identities and social appearances.

In the room

A social comedy built on double identities, romantic manoeuvring and precise verbal satire, with respectable appearances repeatedly undermined by the lies holding them together.

Good fit if you like

mistaken identities, romantic scheming, social satire and sharply mannered comedy.
