Play
The Lady from the Sea
In a remote country house, a doctor's younger second wife finds the comfortable life she chose starting to feel like a trap.
First Night is a theatre diary for logging the shows you've seen and discovering what to see next.
The story
Simon Stone's version after Ibsen moves the play into the present day. Ellida, the younger second wife of Edward, a wealthy doctor, lives with him and his two teenage daughters from his first marriage, Asa and Hilda, and fears she settled too easily for a life of comfort. When Finn, a former lover, arrives at the house, she has to choose between the life she has built and the one she left behind.
In the room
A domestic drama in two acts that swings between sharp family comedy and raw marital crisis, with dialogue full of present-day references and the original's mystical elements played down in favour of a household coming apart.
Good fit if you like
modern rewrites of classic plays, darkly comic family drama and stories about marriage and personal freedom.
