Musical
The Lord of the Rings
A young hobbit inherits a plain gold ring and learns that the Dark Lord who forged it wants it back.
First Night is a theatre diary for logging the shows you've seen and discovering what to see next.
The story
Shaun McKenna and Matthew Warchus's musical compresses all three volumes of J.R.R. Tolkien's novel into one evening, following Frodo Baggins, his loyal friend Sam and a fellowship guided by the wizard Gandalf as they leave the Shire to destroy the One Ring in the fires of Mount Doom. Along the way the Ring's pull works on everyone near it, and its corrupted former owner, Gollum, shadows them.
In the room
A large-scale fantasy spectacle running more than three hours, with a score that blends Indian film music, Finnish folk and theatrical writing, and more weight on physical storytelling than on conventional song-and-dance numbers.
Good fit if you like
epic fantasy quests, Tolkien's Middle-earth and large-scale stage spectacle.
