The Merry Wives of Windsor
Short of money, an old knight sends the same love letter to two well-off married women, who compare notes and plan their revenge.
First Night is a theatre diary for logging the shows you've seen and discovering what to see next.
The story
Shakespeare's only comedy set in contemporary England brings Sir John Falstaff to the market town of Windsor, where Mistress Ford and Mistress Page lure him into a string of humiliating assignations. Mistress Ford's jealous husband, sure he is being cuckolded, disguises himself to spy on Falstaff, while the Pages' daughter Anne is pursued by three suitors: her father's choice, her mother's choice and her own.
In the room
A domestic farce written largely in prose, full of disguises, a laundry basket, comic accents and wordplay, and built on set-piece physical comedy rather than court intrigue.
Good fit if you like
farce, clever women outwitting vain men and Falstaff at his most foolish.
