Comedy

The story

In J. M. Synge's comedy, Christy Mahon arrives at Pegeen Flaherty's pub with an extraordinary story: he says he has killed his father. Instead of turning against him, the villagers begin to admire him, and Christy enjoys an unexpected rise in local standing. His sudden popularity gives him a chance to imagine himself as somebody new.

In the room

The comedy turns on the distance between Christy's startling claim and the villagers' eagerness to believe in him. Admiration, gossip and the desire for a local hero shape the mood around the pub.

Good fit if you like

village comedies, unlikely heroes, gossip and stories about reinvention.
