The Talking Drum

Park Theatre · London

More than fifty years of life on an Islington estate are heard through residents whose stories challenge the version told about them from outside.

First Night is a theatre diary for logging the shows you've seen and discovering what to see next.

Drama
The story

Built from interviews with more than 40 residents of Islington’s Andover Estate, the play interweaves community stories spanning over 50 years. They include a former professional dancer experiencing homelessness, a university student confronting stereotypes, a resident demanding council accountability and a young person who wants to play African drums. Together, the accounts create a counter-narrative to repeated negative portrayals of the estate.
