Florian Zeller’s comedy follows Michel, who is having an affair with Alice, the wife of his best friend Paul. Michel is convinced that keeping the truth from Paul and his own wife, Laurence, is the sensible option, but each conversation makes it harder to tell who is actually deceiving whom. Christopher Hampton provides the English translation.
A compact four-character comedy built around adultery, crossed stories and people trying to justify their own dishonesty. The pleasure is in watching apparently straightforward conversations shift as new information changes what both the characters and audience think they know. The current production runs for around 90 minutes without an interval.
