Musical
The Wizard of Oz
Carried off by a cyclone to a magical land, a Kansas farm girl wants only to find her way home.
First Night is a theatre diary for logging the shows you've seen and discovering what to see next.
The story
Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's stage version of the 1939 MGM film follows Dorothy, who runs away when a spiteful neighbour threatens her dog Toto and is swept by a cyclone to Oz. Told to follow the yellow brick road and ask the Wizard for help, she gathers a Scarecrow, a Tin Man and a Cowardly Lion who each want something they believe they lack, while the Wicked Witch of the West pursues her for her ruby slippers.
In the room
The Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg songs from the film, including Over the Rainbow, sit alongside new numbers by Lloyd Webber and Rice, among them a song for the Wicked Witch and extra material for Dorothy and the Wizard.
Good fit if you like
