TRASH!
Four workers at a recycling centre turn the rubbish around them into instruments, building rhythms out of whatever has been thrown away.
First Night is a theatre diary for logging the shows you've seen and discovering what to see next.
The story
Set in a recycling centre, the show follows four workers who give discarded objects a second life as instruments, drumming on propane tanks, tuning plastic bottles with compressed air and finding rhythm in balls, toolboxes, horns and bin bags. It was created by Yllana, a Spanish physical-comedy company, and percussion group Toom Pak.
In the room
The piece runs as a string of musical sketches mixing percussion, movement and slapstick, with the performers speaking an invented language and a cappella versions of pop and rock songs alongside Beethoven. Two audience members join the band each night.
Good fit if you like
found-object percussion, slapstick physical comedy and family shows with audience participation.
