Waiting for Godot
Two long-time companions wait beside a bare tree on a country road for a man called Godot, whose arrival is always promised for tomorrow.
First Night is a theatre diary for logging the shows you've seen and discovering what to see next.
The story
Vladimir and Estragon, nicknamed Didi and Gogo, wait for Godot, a man they hope may bring them salvation. To fill the hours they talk and turn over philosophical questions. Their waiting is interrupted by Pozzo, a domineering traveller, his servant Lucky, tied to him by a rope, and a boy who carries messages from Godot.
In the room
Beckett subtitled it a tragicomedy in two acts, and the second act closely echoes the first, down to the boy's message. Comic routines sit beside despair, and Lucky, ordered to think, delivers one long, near-incoherent speech.
Good fit if you like
tragicomedy, long-time companions passing the time in talk, and plays with a deliberately unspecified setting.
